The forest was alive with the singing of birds and the chattering of squirrels. The sun shone through the trees brightly, a beautiful golden light. Two cats were padding slowly next to each other. The younger of the two looked as though he was saddened by some thought, while the other was looking around. The smaller one flicked his tail and went to the side, pushing a bush's branches away. He signaled the other to follow.
"Are you sure it's safe in here?" Asked the older cream colored tom. The other nodded.
"Of course it is. Now, what is it you want? You better hurry, because I could be exiled if I'm seen near you!"
"Yes, yes, I know. I just wanted you to know that I've joined BloodClan. I'm not YonderHills anymore. They're calling me Despair."
"Odd name. Is that all you wanted to tell me? Because that's a waste of my time."
"No, no, no! I wanted to make sure- both Rampage and I- that you were still loyal, no matter what."
There was a silence. The golden-red leaves were shaking in the wind. A few leaves on the ground rustled as well. The other cat sighed. "Look, if I wasn't loyal, I'd probably be in BloodClan by now. Flashingstar would've upgraded her security. Don't you two be stupid about it."
Despair gave a shocked look. His fur bristled. "You listen here," he growled. The other cat stopped him.
"You know, I'm the only one in MountainClan that is doing this for you. It would be terrible if something...happened. If your plan was foiled somehow, some way. I think you better watch where you step, Despair."
The older tom grimaced. "I'll see you soon." With a swish of his tail, Despair vanished into the woods.

                                      -----------------------------

Geckopaw's eyes fluttered open. He stretched his front legs and gave a small yawn. Another cat was on top of him, and the apprentice realized that it was Nightpaw.
The day before, Geckopaw had gone out with Nightpaw as a little apology for going off on her. He had been telling her about a potential traitor in the Clan, but she had contradicted his thoughts, just as Flashingstar had.
"Nightpaw," Geckopaw whispered. "Get up. I want to see what ToesTalon and Splashpelt have in store for us today." The she-cat groaned.
"Alright, alright! I'm up." Nightpaw got off of Geckopaw and stumbled outside. He followed her, and padded faster than her, beating her to the fresh-kill pile. There, the brown and white apprentice picked up a crow for them to share.
Just as Nightpaw took the first bite, Geckopaw saw ToesTalon and Splashpelt talking quietly to ShakingLeaves. He pricked his ears. "I think we'll be doing something with Eaglepaw today," Geckopaw meowed. "ShakingLeaves is with ToesTalon and Splashpelt." Nightpaw nodded, and Geckopaw took his bite out of the crow.
The three warriors went over to Geckopaw and Nightpaw. ToesTalon cleared his throat and sat. "You two are going on a hunting assessment on your own with Eaglepaw." Geckopaw grinned. He loved to hunt in the fresh morning air.
"As soon as Eaglepaw is ready," ToesTalon continued. "We'll go. Geckopaw, you go-"
"Wait!" Hiss interrupted the deputy. She padded over next to him, standing taller with her long legs. "Do you mind if Ghostpaw goes with you?" ToesTalon shrugged and looked at the other warriors, who nodded.
"He may come. Now, to continue with where you'll be hunting. Geckopaw, you can go hunt on the trail near Dawnpond. Nightpaw, you can hunt next to the canyon. Don't jump off the edge! Eaglepaw can hunt at the border that leads to the Twoleg places, and Ghostpaw can hunt next to the training hollow. Are we all clear?"
The rest of the cats nodded. ToesTalon sighed. "Eaglepaw shod be with us in a moment, and Ghostpaw still needs waking up. Geckopaw, could you get Ghostpaw?"
"I'm on it!" Geckopaw got up and ran to the apprentice's den. He decided to scare Ghostpaw awake, just because he could. The apprentice crouched low to the stone floor. His belly fur barely touched the ground as his tail was held still. Geckopaw crept forward, little by little, until he was next to his friend. He raised his paw to scare him.
"Geckopaw," came a low meow. "Don't try and scare me. I could hear you from ThunderClan territory, the way you thud in like a lopsided bear." Geckopaw huffed and sat up.
"Well, you gotta get up. We're doing a hunting assessment, and you're going next to the training hollow to hunt." Geckopaw suddenly realized that he was hunting with Nightpaw and her brothers, when he never hunted with his sister, let alone talked to her. Dewpaw seemed fine with talking to her friend Cloudpaw, a newly made apprentice.
"What are you waiting for?" Ghostpaw mewed. "Let's go!"

                                      -------------------------

"Remember Geckopaw," ToesTalon mewed. "Keep as still as possible. You've had a bit of trouble on staying still." Geckopaw nodded.
"I'll do my best!" He meowed proudly. The warrior chuckled. "That's good. You can start hunting now. I'll be watching ever move you make, so be wary!"
Geckopaw nodded. He watched as the cinnamon tom vanished into the trees. Taking a deep breath, he took in his surroundings. There was little prey around him from that exact position. With his claws unsheathed, Geckopaw turned around. "Vole," he muttered. The tom crept forward, getting closer and closer to the soon to be victim.
The vole was sitting on a rock. It was sniffing a nut it had found. The beady eyes and the small whiskers had always made Geckopaw feel somewhat sick, though he wasn't sure why. Maybe it was the guilt of killing another innocent creature, though it was for his own benefit.
The atmosphere was silent and foreboding, almost as though it was a warning from the forest itself. The morning sun was lighting up the forest, and luckily, Geckopaw was facing the sun, which meant no shadows. The apprentice snuck forward a few more steps, and finally pounced on the vole. It wiggled for a moment before going limp, knowing it's impending doom. It's heart beat fast, and the cat nipped its' neck.
Geckopaw picked the vole up. He smelled a familiar scent, then caught sight of a cinnamon red tail. "You'll have to hide better than that, ToesTalon!" Geckopaw chuckled. He buried the vole for later, and went to catch more prey.

Soon, Geckopaw had reached to the border where the trail ended. He smelled a familiar scent. "Who...?" He started to say. His eyes settled on a skinny figure on the ground. The cat's scent was rancid and strong, and Geckopaw realized who it was.
"Fallenheart!" The apprentice padded forward. "What are you doing here?" The old tabby looked up with his yellow eyes wide. He looked frightened as Geckopaw sniffed again. The younger tom narrowed his eyes. "What're you up to?" He went closer, but Fallenheart jumped up before he could look.
"No, don't!" He hissed. Geckopaw jumped back. "What did you do this time?!" Fallenheart looked around wildly. "Tell me, who is here with you? Who?!" Geckopaw flattened his ears.
"I'm on a hunting assessment. ToesTalon should be around, though I haven't smelled or scented him lately." Fallenheart seemed relieved. He stood up, face to face with Geckopaw. His sour breath washed over his pelt.
"Listen, Geckopaw," Fallenheart meowed. "You must be pretty hungry, am I correct?" Geckopaw nodded slowly. "What are you getting at," the apprentice hissed.
"Well, you're not going to hunt very well on an empty stomach, are you? You might as well eat this mouse with me." He flicked his ratty tail towards the small, half eaten body next to him. Geckopaw looked up and widened his eyes.
"That's against the Code, though!" He stepped back. "I shouldn't, I can't!" Fallenheart shook his head. "No one needs to know! Besides, there's much more prey out there." Geckopaw looked at the mouse. His stomach growled, and saliva filled his mouth.
"I...I...guess it won't hurt." He walked past Fallenheart and ate the rest of the mouse. When he finished, he licked his jaws. A sharp pain went into his scruff, and he winced.
"Listen!" Fallenheart growled. "You won't tell anyone! Not even Nightpaw, got it?" Geckopaw nodded and slipped away. The warrior was staring at Geckopaw with a crude smile.
"Have a nice assessment," he meowed gruffly. Geckopaw hissed and went into the woods.

                                       ------------------------------

Later, Geckopaw and the others had returned to camp. Geckopaw had two mice, a vole, and a sparrow. Nightpaw had caught a squirrel and three mice. They didn't know what Eaglepaw and Ghostpaw had caught, since they were still hunting.
ToesTalon and Splashpelt were walking beside them. ToesTalon tapped Geckopaw's flank. "You did well, Geckopaw," he meowed. "I'm sure your father will be proud."
"Thanks," the apprentice mewed. He thought for a moment. "Were you watching me the entire time?"
"Almost. At one point, I bumped into Splashpelt on accident. I caught up with you as you went away from the border. Why do you ask?"
"Just a thought. By the way, I saw your tail at one point." ToesTalon stopped. "Were you looking up at all?" Geckopaw shook his head, and the deputy stopped. Geckopaw looked back.
"What? Am I supposed to look up?" ToesTalon lashed his tail. The apprentice could tell something was wrong. ToesTalon never moved his tail unless he was worried, or thinking.
"That wasn't me," he muttered. "We need to get to camp, now." Splashpelt looked at ToesTalon. "What is it?" The tabby warrior asked. ToesTalon gave her a look, and Splashpelt sighed. "Let's go then," she mewed. They all hurried off into camp.

ToesTalon left the other three to go into the leader's den. Splashpelt turned to the younger apprentices. "You two can rest for a while. First, take some of your prey to the elders. Geckopaw, you can take a mouse to you mother. I don't think she's ready to have anything too large yet." Geckopaw nodded. He was grateful for the chance to see his mother.
Geckopaw set down the sparrow and one mouse. He asked Nightpaw if she could take the vole, and, of course, she said yes. He took the mouse and went to the medicine den.
"Crescentbeam," he mewed quietly. "Are you awake?" There was a hoarse response, and Geckopaw went in.
After they had gotten home, Crescentbeam was too sick to continue her warrior duties, especially when she had been kidnapped by BloodClan during her queenship. Waspwing, having been a medicine cat before, became the new medicine cat and made Cloudpaw her apprentice. They both said that Crescentbeam was too sick to even be outside of the medicine den.
"Geckopaw, is that you?" Cloudpaw mewed from a dark corner. "Yes, it's me. I thought Crescentbeam might be hungry." Cloudpaw nodded, and Waspwing padded over. Her black coat was ragged.
"Let me see what it is first," she mewed. Geckopaw held up the mouse, and she nodded her approval. Geckopaw put the mouse in front of Crescentbeam and pushed it close to her with his nose.
"I thought you might be hungry," he mewed quietly. Waspwing was watching as Geckopaw talked to her. Crescentbeam looked up at her son for a moment before taking a small bite. Geckopaw smiled and nuzzled his mother's cheek for a moment.
"She's been unresponsive to Cloudpaw and I," Waspwing meowed softly. "Only when you and Dewpaw come in, does she ever actually speak at all." Geckopaw looked up. "Dewpaw has come in here?"
"Yes. Why are you surprised?" Geckopaw looked away. "No reason." He stood up and dipped his head to the old medicine cat, swiftly leaving. He bumped into Nightpaw.
"There you are Geckopaw!" She meowed. He blinked. "What is it?" Nightpaw motioned to the leader's den.
"ToesTalon wants to see you. He looked kind of upset." Geckopaw nodded and thanked her quickly before going to see ToesTalon.

"Tell me again what that tail looked like," ToesTalon meowed. Geckopaw sighed.
"It was the same color as yours it looked like it belonged to a tabby, and the tip was more white than yours." The deputy was in deep thought, pacing back and forth. His eyes were narrowed.
"Why is it soimportant on what they look like? It's just some stupid rogue or something." ToesTalon looked at him.
"You know what my past is, correct?" Geckopaw shook his head. "No, not really."
  "I was born a Kittypet."

"Oh, I do remember." ToesTalon rolled his green eyes. "I had a brother and a sister. My brother, Steve, used to always follow me. Daphne would always try and get away from me."
"And what does that have to do with anything?" Geckopaw flicked his tail. ToesTalon sighed. "Steve has managed to catch my scent, and he's followed me out here."
"So he can join the Clan?"

"No! My brother cannot join. He won't survive in the forest. Especially with BloodClan cats."
"Well, maybe you could give him a chance. I'm tired, so I'm getting some sleep before training." Geckopaw padded out.

                                        --------------------------

Geckopaw's amber and silver eyes blinked open. He shook his head and looked around. He was in what looked like the ghost of a forest. The trees seemed visible, but he would not be able to touch them. The ground was covered in a dense white shroud of fog.
"Hello?" He yowled. The forest seemed empty. Out of nowhere, a bright orange light began to shine. Geckopaw closed his eyes for a moment, and looked back up, only to see BrightSun. The former MountainClan leader was young, and didn't have ruffles of fur poking out of places.
"Greetings, young Geckopaw," he meowed. "I've brought you to StarClan for an important message." Geckopaw, shocked by the sight, hesitantly dipped his head in respect.
"Before you tell me the message," Geckopaw meowed. "I wanted to ask a question that everyone in the Clan wants to know. Who killed you?" BrightSun only shook his head.
"I don't know. I was fighting alongside Eaglepaw, when the next thing I knew, there was a sharp claw across my neck. Everything turned black at that point." Geckopaw flattened his ears.
"I'm sorry you had to die so soon."

"I was going to die soon anyways. But now is not the time to mourn or greet each other. I want you to meet two very special cats." Just as BrightSun began to speak, two other cats appeared. One was a handsome ginger tom, and the other was a long-furred tom with a single stripe.
"This is Firestar, one of the greatest leaders the forest has ever known. He was from ThunderClan. And this is his friend, Graystripe." Each of the Tom's dipped his head, and Geckopaw dipped his head as well.
"I'm glad to have met you, Geckopaw," Firestar meowed. "BrightSun has told me much about you." Geckopaw nodded.
"I think I remember a few stories about you. You defeated some evil cat, right?" Firestar nodded.
"Tigerstar. He's not a problem anymore." Graystripe nodded. "I never liked Tigerstar. He was a mean old cat. Acted like there was always a thorn poking his side!"
Firestar laughed. "That's right. We should tell Geckopaw what we need to say now, shouldn't we? He needs to get back to training soon." Graystripe nodded again.
"Training. Always interesting with you, huh Firestar!" BrightSun gave a laughing sigh.
"There is a prophecy, Geckopaw. It concerns not only MountainClan, but the whole forest. You must tell Flashingstar, and she must warn the rest of the Clans."
The apprentice nodded. "Fire away!" Graystripe chuckled. "I remember when we used to be that confident," he muttered to Firestar.
BrightSun cleared his throat as his green eyes glowed. "There will be six among the stars, each chosen to find truth and battle deception by StarClan's will."
Geckopaw flattened his ears. "What's that supposed to mean?" Firestar shrugged, and looked at Graystripe. "Don't look at me!" The gray tom meowed. "It's not like I know everything!" BrightSun rolled his eyes.
"Now, wake up and tell Flashingstar as soon as you can!" Geckopaw panicked as he began to fade.
"Wait, what if she doesn't listen?!" Geckopaw cried. "She will listen!" Graystripe meowed.
"Tell ToesTalon if you have to." Firestar meowed. "You can always trust the deputy and the leader to make the right decision." Graystripe began to laugh.
"Look who's talking!" Firestar hit him with his tail. BrightSun gave one last yowl to Geckopaw.
"Tell Flashingstar, and save the Clans!"
